Isn’t it great to see what New York does for sports entertainment?
During the early years of this organization, they played as the New Jersey Americans, out of Teaneck, NJ. Their first move was to Long Island as the New York Nets, playing in the ABA and led by Hall of Famer Julius “Dr. J” Erving. That first tenure in NY earned the Nets 2 ABA championships. After the ABA – NBA merger, the Nets moved back to New Jersey and saw two consecutive finals appearances in the 01 – 02 & 02 – 03 seasons, but seen more downs than ups… the 06 – 07 season was the last the New Jersey Nets seen of the post season.
Bring it to the 12 – 13 season, the Nets front office, headed strongly by minority owner and Brooklyn native, JAY Z, officially rename and rebrand the team as the Brooklyn Nets. Barclays Center, the teams new arena, is right in the heart of Downtown Brooklyn.
New Season. New Name. New Arena. New Fans. Old City.
Coming back to a home once prosperous came with its benefits. G Deron Williams opted to stay with the team. The New York Knicks experienced first hand that their inner city rivals won’t go down without a fight, splitting the season series 2 – 2. The Nets also made the playoffs for the first time in 6 years.
Oh, but it doesn’t stop there. The off-season has been just as exciting.
The Nets signed 22nd overall pick from Duke, Mason Plumlee, the younger brother of Indiana Pacers’ Miles Plumlee.
Only a week into retiring as a player for the Knicks, Nets vet and future Hall of Famer Jason Kidd signs on as Head Coach, after the front office announced current coach, P. J. Carlesimo, wouldn’t be returning. Nets former head coach (04 – 10) Lawrence Frank was brought in as lead assistant coach.
A month later…
The Nets acquire former NBA champions Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Jason Terry from the Boston Celtics. F D. J. White was also part of the deal. Garnett and Pierce have 25 All Star appearances between them. The Celtics received Gerald Wallace, Kris Humphries, MarShon Brooks, Kris Joseph, Keith Bogans and three first round draft picks (’14, ’16 & ’18), as well as the right to swap first round picks in 2017.
Free agents Andrei Kirilenko and Shaun Livingston have also signed with the Nets, while FA Andray Blatche returns. Kirilenko reunites with Deron Williams. They spent 5.5 seasons together on the Utah Jazz before Williams moved to NJ.
Front Office. Front Court. Back Court. Bench Depth. Our team is hitting heavy this coming season. Are you ready?
#HELLOBROOKLYNDisclaimer: I did not hop on the bandwagon. I’ve been a fan since Kidd wore the uniform in NJ.
